Gian Hodgson (35), started playing tennis between the ages of 3 to 5. Over the years, he has experienced all the highs and lows of a successful tennis career, representing Aruba on international stages and earning a tennis scholarship. Now, he is dedicating himself to contributing to the growth and development of tennis in Aruba.

Gian's love for tennis began when his parents enrolled him in tennis lessons at the age of 3. "My dad later started giving me tennis lessons when I was a little older. I don't know why I liked the sport at first, I just did."

Quickly, Gian developed a passion for tennis and began playing in tournaments at a young age. "When I started playing tournaments in U10 and U12, that was the moment the sport became more serious for me. The fact of losing and then wanting to improve to beat the person you just lost to, gave my tennis lessons a purpose."

โ€œRepresenting Aruba in the Davis Cup is definitely one of the most outstanding moments. There are many other memorable experiences as well, but the best part for me is that I was able to experience many of them with my closest friends and familyโ€

Inspired by Marat Safin, Gian developed an aggressive baseline playing style and learned the importance of working hard during moments of pressure. "I tried to serve hard and score points with my forehand. That's more how I wanted to play, but eventually you also realize that during moments of pressure when you're a little nervous and can forget how to hit the ball, the most important thing is simply to play hard and put the ball back into play."

As a tennis player, Gian left Aruba and his family at 15 to attend a tennis academy in the United States, when he received a scholarship to continue his studies, thanks to his contributions to the sport of tennis. "Honestly, I don't consider these things as sacrifices really. I liked practicing and when I went to the tennis academy, I went to a place where I was surrounded by people just like me and could play tennis all day!

Gian managed to study at the University of Wisconsin, which was a significant achievement for him. โ€œI was extremely happy and relieved. It was a lot of work for me and my family to contact all the different schools and ask if they were interested in having me be part of their program. Many said no, but luckily some said yes. The simple fact of being able to play tennis and study at the University of Wisconsin was a fantastic experience. I met friends there who I will forever stay in touch with. To get a program to give you a scholarship is very similar to applying for a job. You have to send your application to different programs, but in the end, if you're good enough, a coach will want you on their team.

TENNIS ARUBA - THE FUTURE

Gian's motivation to return to Aruba and contribute to the development of tennis comes from his love for the sport and the desire to ensure that kids in Aruba can enjoy tennis. As a member of Aruba Tennis Bond, he aims to grow the tennis community in Aruba by organizing more tournaments, events, and guiding junior players.

He emphasizes the need for more tournaments to give players a purpose and to practice more intensely.

EMPOWERING YOUNG TENNIS PLAYERS

Having experienced the benefits of a tennis scholarship firsthand, Gian plans to support and encourage young players in Aruba to pursue similar opportunities. He advises them to work hard, be patient, and have perseverance in their journey to obtain a scholarship.

Gian Hodgson's tennis journey showcases the unique aspects of the sport, from teaching mental resilience and discipline to offering life-changing opportunities. As he dedicates himself to shaping the next generation of tennis players in Aruba, his passion and commitment will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in the community.
