Why Politics?

I studied law and fiscal law and worked for several years at the Tax Department. Later, before entering politics, I worked at a law firm, never imagining I would one day step into the political arena. While I enjoyed my work and dedicated myself fully to my profession as a lawyer, I always carried a desire in my heart to contribute to my country in a more direct way. Coming from a family of politicians, I was often asked if I wanted to follow in their footsteps. I always said no until it became difficult to continue saying no. I realized that the most effective way to address Aruba’s challenges and bring positive change was to enter the world of public service. My determination and goal as a politician are to transform my passion for problem-solving and my commitment to social justice into actions that benefit our people.

What Makes Me the Right Person for Politics?

In an era of constant change and significant challenges, I believe in my ability to adapt quickly to emerging situations. My strong sense of empathy and leadership experience in previous roles have been crucial in navigating this position. These qualities have given me unique perspectives that help me understand different problems and connect with people on a human level. The past years of governance have not been easy due to the many crises our country has faced, but even in the most challenging times, I’ve demonstrated that I can lead effectively. I firmly believe in collaboration and communication, emphasizing listening to our professionals. I also believe in governing with transparency—keeping the public informed during both good and difficult times. These qualities enable me to lead effectively and serve Aruba with dedication and integrity.

How Do You Stay Updated?

Amidst the work and frequent stress of tackling challenges, I keep myself relevant and updated by continuing to educate myself and staying informed about local and global developments. For me, it’s important to listen to expert advice and stay in touch with the needs and concerns of our people. Participating in local and international conferences on relevant topics is one way I stay informed. I read extensively and use digital platforms to stay updated on news, trends, and innovations.

How Do You Maintain Human Connection in a Social Media Era?

Although I use social media actively to share information and engage in dialogue with citizens, I believe personal interaction remains essential. As Prime Minister, this is not always easy, given the daily and constant demands of the position. For this reason, our party, MEP, organizes 'Ban Topa' events in various districts across Aruba. These events provide valuable opportunities to meet people in person, listen to their concerns, and engage in meaningful dialogue about current and political topics. This helps me stay directly connected to the community outside of the digital space.

What Are the Most Urgent Challenges?

During the past seven years, the MEP Government has guided Aruba through some of its most challenging moments, making this period of governance anything but easy. From financial crises to the pandemic, we have faced each obstacle with determination and resilience, successfully serving all citizens. Now, just four years after the pandemic, the MEP Government has achieved stability for our country and created financial space. In the next term, the MEP will focus on seven key priorities:

  • 1. COST OF LIVING
    Continue reducing living costs.
    Expand the basic goods basket.
    Implement price control awareness.
Explore the possibility of importing chicken and beef from Colombia.
Assist merchants in reducing import costs to lower product prices.
  • 2. IMPROVING PURCHASING POWER
  • Continue increasing the minimum wage.
  • Increase financial support for those with limitations.
  • Reduce income tax rates so citizens have more disposable income.
  • Lower electricity tariffs and introduce subsidies to ensure families in need are not left without water or electricity.
Provide childcare subsidies for parents with children in daycare.
  • Create affordable social housing.
  • Eliminate school fees for kindergarten and primary education.
  • 3. SENIORS
  • Gradually increase pensions responsibly.
  • Reduce the tax burden on pensions.
  • Improve care services for seniors, both at home and in care facilities.
  • Provide specialized geriatric healthcare.
  • Ensure pensioners' medications are covered again by AZV.

How Will You Achieve the Changes You Seek?

The support of our people is crucial to achieving this. Thanks to the trust our citizens have placed in our party, we have been able to govern this country with love, transparency, responsibility, and faith. Today, together, we stand on a resilient and stronger Aruba. With optimism, determination, and dedication, we have governed from 2017 to 2024, addressing key priorities for Aruba. With the same attitude and determination, we aim to govern from 2025 to 2029. We have proven our ability to govern during challenging times, and with your support and confidence, we will continue to keep Aruba on a path of positive development. Together, we will achieve great things for Aruba.

"When I first assumed office in 2017, Aruba was in a challenging financial situation, with growing deficits and a lack of transparency in public finances. From the first day, my priority was to restore stability and put our finances back on track. During the inherited financial and social crises, and later the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, my cabinet worked tirelessly to protect the health of our citizens while safeguarding our economy.

We successfully navigated through difficult times, bringing stability and tranquility. My commitment is to continue building a stronger and more prosperous Aruba, where every citizen feels secure and has opportunities to thrive. If the people of Aruba grant me another opportunity, I will continue to ensure transparency, responsible management, and the well-being of all Arubans."
