Not every path is straight, and Diego Valentin Zapata (27) knows that better than most. Born in Aruba and raised in the neighborhood of Seroe Biento, his childhood was filled with unforgettable memories. “I had a really beautiful childhood with my family and friends around the house—running around the neighborhood, doing fun things that I’ll always remember,” he begins. His school years were filled with challenges, and although he didn’t finish his Mavo or EPB, that never stopped his drive to succeed. He started working at a hardware store and later joined a pool company. Like many, during the pandemic, new ideas began to dominate his mind—among them, the dream of starting his own business. Being naturally drawn to cleanliness, Diego found inspiration to begin his own company. He owned a motorbike which he used for sport, but decided to sell it and use those funds to invest in himself. And just like that, Excellent Pool Cleaning Services was born.

Getting started wasn’t easy. Since his previous job was with a pool company, for six months he wasn’t allowed to work in anything related to that field unless he paid a fine. Still, Diego persisted, and soon the clients started coming in. “I started with one pool while I was still working as a driver elsewhere.” He would wake up every morning at 5 a.m. to clean a few pools before 8 a.m., return home to prepare, head to his day job until 5 p.m., then come back, change clothes, and go out again to service more pools until 7 p.m. "My first client came through a friend who recommended me to a contractor who had just built a pool. That same client is still with me today and means a lot to me. Even now, he continues to recommend me to many of his acquaintances who switched over and gave me the chance to clean their pools.”
Today, that one pool has grown into 26 pools that Diego services on a daily basis.
Through great effort, Diego has built a loyal customer base. His rules are simple but firm:
Deliver the same great service every day, treat the customer like royalty, always communicate honestly, stay updated on the industry, and most importantly—always be the one doing the work. “I like learning and seeing people happy. That gives me the energy to keep going.”

Not everything went according to plan. Diego is honest about the mistakes he’s made.
“As a young person starting a business, my biggest mistake was spending too much, being irresponsible with the company. I didn’t listen to my elders—until I lost my only car, which was also my work car. That moment made me realize how fast I could lose everything, in the blink of an eye.”
Now, he dedicates each day to keeping his clients happy. The value he places on his business runs deep. Excellent Pool Cleaning Services is a reflection of his character—constantly working, without ever losing its essence.
Although he enjoys working solo, many times his father helps him out in the business.
“My dad helps me. It creates a different type of connection and friendship between us. We’ve learned how to understand each other professionally. He pushes me to keep going. Just like my mom—she helps me mentally and always motivates me.” His goals are clear: continue growing Excellent Pool Cleaning Services and keep moving forward. “My wish is to enjoy life and that those who helped me along the way, especially my mom and dad, can be proud. I’m sure they’ll keep guiding me and helping me however they can.”
“Don’t be afraid. Don’t worry about what people will say. Believe in yourself. In the beginning, it won’t be easy, but nothing is impossible. Push yourself to reach the place you want to be.”
